Description

Under the trees on the edge of the green oldest son, Adam Dampford and his own son Rowan are unpacking the picnic  for the rest of the family. Catering for the Dampfords is like feeding an army so there are plenty of sandwiches and good things to eat in that wicker basket.
We don't see a lot of Adam, he is  usually busy in the forge as he knows he and his brother Isaac will take it over from his Father Ben one day. The rest of the time he is with his wife Louise and his son Rowan. Rowan doesn't have a biblical name- unlike all the other Dampford children- as he was born under the Rowan tree in the back garden of Forge Cottage by accident. Adam wanted to call him Ezekiel but Louise put her foot down and insisted that no other name would do for a child born in 'the wild' - so to speak.
Adam is a devoted young father, but he does have his own  Dad as a great role model for patience, gentleness and - where appropriate- firmness! Luckily for Adam and Louise all the rest of the Dampfords are very happy to babysit and watch Rowan for them which makes life easier. Living in Forge cottage has it's ups and downs, (mostly caused by the overcrowding, Adam and his small family  do have the old Dining room as their own space) but generally the Dampfords do get on (except for the occasions where Isaac and John clash explosively!) and they are a cheerful bunch.
Bunny is sneaking closer and  closer to the picnic basket because he can smell something tasty and wants a better look.
Drawn on cartridge paper with a propelling pencil, scanned, inked and coloured in Photoshop.

I don't draw babies very often.

One of the numerous traits I love about your work, Auntie, is how human you make each character- they are wonderfully life-like, and become real people in one's imagination. I esp love the Dampford family-their bonds are strong and they work through their differences. It is the same sort of family I wished I had, or wish in having on my own someday.

Adam has chosen the perfect spot-quiet, uncrowded and grassy. Even Bunny agrees, it seems. (Does he get some lunch as well?)

So that's how Rowan got his name! I wonder, esp. with all the other Dampford children having Biblical names. Though, according to Louise' reasoning, Rowan's name is perfect, being born under the Rowan tree.

A crowded house can have its stressful moments, but it seems like it brings families closer together (beyond the literal sense, of course), and it's evident the loving bonds the Dampford family shows to one another. They have hearts of gold! Even if Isaac and John scrap time from time! :giggle:

Adam's serene joy on his face brings such a subtle yet vivid life to this picture, and little Rowan's beaming smile and wiggling limbs just top the already endearing picture with adorableness!
